What Is a Power Facial?
Our Power Facial treatment is microdermabrasion followed by a hydrating or skin detoxing treatment masque, or a boost to exfoliation with a light chemical peel. Our Medical Aestheticians will discuss your treatment goals with you to determine the best microdermabrasion treatment options for your skin.
Why Exfoliate With Microdermabrasion?
The epidermis is your skin’s outermost layer, which is comprised mostly of dead skin cells. Microdermabrasion buffs and polishes away dead skin. This process immediately improves skin texture, dull patches and fine lines. Microdermabrasion can remove 2-3 weeks of dead skin, revealing brighter, fresher skin, boosting cell turnover and enhancing the penetration of skin care products. Microdermabrasion is noninvasive as it does not remove live skin cells and requires no downtime. Layering microdermabrasion with other superficial treatments such as dermaplaning, light chemical peels and hydrating masques creates a customized, boosted treatment and also a “glow” that microdermabrasion alone does not produce.
Is Microdermabrasion Right for Me?
Microdermabrasion treatments are customized to your skin condition, gentle and safe for all skin types, requiring no downtime. Immediately after your first microdermabrasion treatment, your skin will look and feel healthier, hydrated, smoother and softer. Your improvements will continue to progress with routine microdermabrasion treatments. Treatments every 4-6 weeks are ideal. We treat the face, neck and décolleté for women; face and neck for men.
Are Monthly Treatments Ok Year-Round?
A common misconception is that one should avoid microdermabrasion treatments, or any skin care treatments, in the summer or before a sunny vacation. Spending time outside after your treatment is perfectly safe as long as you use a UVA/UVB sunscreen daily and reapply as directed. A wide-brimmed hat is always recommended to ensure the least amount of sun exposure.
What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a simple and safe medical skin care procedure for exfoliating the epidermis and temporarily ridding the skin of fine vellus hair (peach fuzz). Dermaplaning performed before microdermabrasion and/or before a light chemical peel provides a deeper treatment without downtime. By ridding the skin of fine vellus hair, products penetrate better and makeup glides on for a better finish.
Worried About Removing Facial Hair?
I know what you’re thinking, “but won’t my hair grow back thicker?” The answer is NO. There are two types of hair on the human body, terminal and vellus hair. Terminal hairs are the thick pigmented hairs that grow by the influence of hormones (legs, armpits, scalp, pubic area, etc). Vellus hairs are fine translucent hairs usually found on a woman’s face, back or chest. Unlike terminal hairs, when vellus hairs are cut they grow back with the same thickness and length as before, only with a blunt tip and are expected to return in approximately two to four weeks post procedure. Removal of the vellus hair has more than just an aesthetic benefit. Excessive “face fuzz” can trap oil and dirt which can lead to other skin problems. Best of all, the removal of the vellus hair and dead skin cells allows for the proper penetration of other facial products, increasing their efficacy and ultimately their results.
What Are the Benefits of Light Chemical Peels?
When performing manual exfoliation such as dermaplaning or microdermabrasion prior to a light (superficial) chemical peel, the peel solution penetrates more effectively. This provides a boosted improvement to overall texture and brightness of skin. Examples of light peel solutions are lactic acid and glycolic acid. What your skin can tolerate varies from person to person, some will have light flaking for a day or two after the treatment, depending on which peel solution is used. Our Medical Aestheticians will discuss options with you to customize the right treatment for your skin, your active lifestyle, and the season.
