What Causes Sun Damage?

Did you know that 90% of visible aging is caused by environmental damage, and the sun is the number one offender? Yes, UV rays are the root of this damage, and UV induced free radicals are the source of cellular change that lead to hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, and skin laxity. Free radicals are molecules with unpaired electrons, which makes them unstable and highly chemically reactive. Inside the skin, free radicals damage cells, their DNA, and other vital cellular components.

The skin has a natural reservoir of antioxidants that neutralizes free radicals before damage is done, but their protective benefits one quickly depleted by exposure to environmental and lifestyle factors such as UV rays, sun-induced free radicals, infrared radiation A (IRA), pollution, alcohol, and cigarette smoke. Antioxidants inhibit the oxidation of other molecules; their destructive effects on skin are prevented.
