Tummy Tuck

Abdominoplasty

If you have been unsuccessful in your attempts to lose excess fat and skin around your midsection, abdominoplasty may be right for you. Abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure that removes skin and fat from the middle to lower abdomen and tightens the abdominal muscles for a sleeker, more defined appearance. Tummy tucks are considered major surgery, so please make sure to discuss all of your questions and concerns with Dr. Kelly Sullivan during your private consultation.

Procedure & Results

A tummy tuck requires a horizontal incision in the area between the pubic hairline and navel. The shape and length of the incision will be determined by the degree of correction necessary. Dr. Kelly Sullivan will work through the incision to repair and suture weakened abdominal muscles and remove excess fat, tissue and skin. A second incision around the navel may be necessary to remove excess skin in the upper abdomen.

An abdominoplasty takes about one to three hours depending on whether it is a mini, standard or extended abdominoplasty. Tummy tuck surgery is done on an outpatient basis with general anesthesia. Because safety is always our first concern, Dr. Kelly Sullivan always works with board-certified Maryland anesthesiologists at an accredited surgical center to ensure that your surgery is as safe as possible.

Following your tummy tuck surgery, you will be able to rest in the comfort of your own home. You should expect the following results from your tummy tuck surgery performed by Dr. Kelly Sullivan:

  • A flatter, trimmer abdomen
  • Tighter abdominal muscles and  a defined waistline
  • Elimination of most stretch marks
  • Changes body proportion to enhance overall shape
  • Clothing that fits better
  • Improved self image and confidence

Recovery & Aftercare

Dr. Kelly Sullivan will give you written instructions for how to care for yourself after tummy tuck surgery. For example, you might expect:

  • Some degree of bruising, swelling, tenderness and/or numbness
  • Drains may remain in place for about seven to 10 days
  • Stitches are under the skin and will desolve in four to six weeks
  • Bed rest the day of surgery is recommended
  • Limit activity for the next two days following surgery
  • Avoid strenuous activities for about four to six weeks
  • Return to work in one to three weeks

Dr. Kelly Sullivan may recommend that you wear an abdominal binder for a few weeks for support

There will be some follow-up appointments your surgeon to monitor your tummy tuck surgery recovery, so be sure to keep them. With attentive self-care and compliance with Dr. Kelly Sullivan’s advice, most people are very happy with the outcome of their tummy tuck surgery.

Insurance Guidelines

Tummy tucks are usually considered cosmetic in nature and therefore not covered by insurance.

Dr. Sullivan and ALL of her staff are efficient, thorough, and thoughtful. They made me feel so relaxed on the day of the procedure. After the infection on my right side, I was actually scared to have the left drain removed; but the nurse held my hands and just truly made me feel so comforted! While Dr. Sullivan is exactly what I would want in a surgeon, her staff is also a great support system!
