What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a procedure that uses implants to enlarge small breasts and rebalance breasts of different size or proportion. It is also the procedure used to recreate the breast size and shape that a woman had before pregnancy and/or nursing.  Many times a patient will be interested in just “filling out the skin” where the breast was before pregnancy.  Breast augmentation is a very gratifying procedure for many women who would like to regain their pre-pregnancy figures.

Why Breast Augmentation?

Women choose breast augmentation for many reasons. Sullivan Surgery & Spa offers several types of procedures to enhance the size, shape or contour of your breasts. Patients choose to have breast augmentation surgery to improve the balance of their figure, correct the loss of breast volume and firmness due to pregnancy, nursing, weight loss or age. Dr. Sullivan will help you achieve symmetry with breast size due to underdevelopment or as a reconstructive need. Breast augmentation will help improve how your clothing and swimsuits fit, enhance your overall appearance and boost your confidence and self-image.

When you begin your breast augmentation journey, it’s best to understand that your ideal breast shape and size depends on both your body’s frame and your own personal preferences. Dr. Kelly Sullivan will work closely with you to create a breast surgery plan that specifically matches your desires and image of your breast’s ideal shape to your body’s form and function.

When you meet with Dr. Kelly Sullivan  you won’t be rushed. They make sure there is enough time for a thorough consultation so she can clearly understand your goals for surgery. With the help of their supportive office staff, they will guide you through the process from beginning to end, ensuring all of your concerns are addressed and your questions are answered.

Types of Breast Implants

Women now have more options than ever before in choosing a comfortable, safe and natural-looking implant for a breast enhancement. Implant options can be narrowed to two types: silicone (gel) and saline (salt water). There is now a new generation of silicone gel implants, called Memory Gel(TM), recently approved by the FDA. Dr. Kelly Sullivan will discuss these options with you during your consultation.

The Consultation

Because we always put safety first, we begin every consultation by discussing your overall health and well-being.  Our next considerations are:

  • Your goals for the outcome of the surgery. Dr. Sullivan will work with you to determine that your expectations for your post-surgery breast size are realistic and attainable.
  • Your frame and current breast size, shape and width. Are you hoping to lose a significant amount of weight either before or after surgery? What size breasts would be most appropriate for your body frame?
  • The amount of sagging you presently experiencing. This, too, affects how our doctor will perform the surgery.

Procedure & Results

During breast enhancement surgery, your doctor will make a small incision, usually under the lower portion of the breast near the chest wall. A pocket is created for the implant either under the breast tissue or under the chest wall muscle. Once this pocket is created, the doctor will carefully center the implant beneath the nipple and suture the skin.

A breast augmentation surgery with our doctors takes about one hour. This surgery is done on an outpatient basis with general anesthesia. Because safety is always our first concern, we always work with board-certified Maryland anesthesiologists to ensure that your surgery is as safe as possible. Following your surgery, you will be able to rest in the comfort of your own home.

Although patients usually return to work in less than one week, breast implants still require time to heal after breast augmentation.  The acute recovery is between five days and two weeks, but you should wait six weeks before resuming heavy lifting or aggressive exercise. Your implants will at first feel high and tight; this is the body’s natural response to recent surgery. It takes three to six months for the implants to settle and relax and give the kind of natural look that patients seek. This is something that patients need to consider before undergoing a breast augmentation surgery. If you’re thinking of breast augmentation surgery with a specific timeframe in mind, try to leave a window of at least six to 12 weeks for surgical scheduling.  If you have very specific time limitations, please call our office to discuss your particular needs and we will make every effort possible to accommodate your busy schedule.

My experience from A to Z was fantastic! I have recommended Dr. Sullivan and her team to every person I know who has mentioned interest in a cosmetic procedure. From front desk to surgeon, each and every person that I have encountered at this practice has made me feel welcome. I did a lot of research prior to my surgery and have been over 100-percent satisfied with Dr. Sullivan’s practice. Her work is absolutely beautiful! Also special thanks to Erica and Jennie for making my experience efficient and comfortable!
